When you cross the middle of Gili Trawangan, you’ll see small villages, local huts, new mini-resorts and a few cows, all dotted within a seemingly never ending forest of palm trees. They stretch as far as you can see, lining the main path that links two sides of the island. Most afternoons, after the midday sun had cooled off a bit, we walked the 15 minutes to the sunset beaches, hearing the wind in the palms above and avoiding the horse and carts that drove back and forth every day.
